DualDisc
The DualDisc has both a CD side and a DVD side and therefore opens up exciting new possibilities for artists and music companies to offer audio, video and software content on a single, double-sided disc.
On one side of this hybrid optical storage disc, the consumer finds a music album with a total playing time of about 60 minutes. The other side, a DVD, offers room for content such as an expanded form of the CD side’s music album, 5.1 surround sound, music videos, interviews with the artist or tour, backstage and documentary film material, photo galleries, song texts, electronic files of songs for playing on a PC and web links. The content offered depends entirely on the marketing plan for the particular title or on the artist’s wishes.
As a basic principle, no new hardware needs to be purchased in order to play DualDiscs. However, in order to enjoy the full advantages of DualDiscs with their surround sound capabilities, a corresponding 5.1 channel surround system should be used. The DVD side of the DualDisc offers high-quality sound and for that reason many DualDisc titles contain surround sound mixes that were specifically created for this purpose during the recording process. The result is a full three-dimensional musical experience.
In addition, the DVD side also plays on all DVD-compatible systems, including many gaming consoles and computers. In a PC, the DVD side acts like a DVD-ROM if the DualDisc contains bonus computer material or web links. With a few exceptions, the CD side plays on all CD-compatible players.
Since fall 2004, a whole series of DualDisc titles from many different genres has been available, including both new releases and back catalog titles. Because of the strong interest shown by numerous consumers, artists and music companies, the number of titles is constantly increasing.
